The first few major effects of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking control of the DC ship have started to show as Henry Cavill confirms his departure from the DCEU as Superman. The actor dropped this news on his Instagram with a note explaining that Gunn and Safran met with him to deliver the news.
James Gunn announced over Twitter that he and Saffran will be taking a clean-slate approach to the DC Universe and starting from scratch. This is a bold new direction for the franchise and could potentially yield great results. However, it comes at the cost of beloved actors like Henry Cavill departing from their roles.
Cavill expressed his disappointment at losing the role but remains optimistic about the DC Universe and wished Gunn and Safran the best of luck.
The British actor first donned the cape in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and won over fans across the board. While the movie itself had mixed reactions, fans universally praised Cavill and heralded him as the Superman of the new generation. The actor reprised the role in the subsequent Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League.
This news comes at an awkward time as the actor had just only announced his return to the DCEU with a cameo in Black Adam. It would appear that the return is not likely to materialize any longer as the pair of Gunn and Safran have other plans in mind for the DC Universe.
James Gunn has confirmed that he will be writing the next Superman movie which will explore the character at an earlier point in his life. Additionally, the writer-director has also confirmed that they are currently discussing a project for Ben Affleck to direct within the new DC Universe.
